52 Week Drawing Project: Weeks 29-30

I hope everyone is doing well this week and not going stir-crazy! I'm very much an introvert, so staying home is kind of my dream job. Honestly, the only thing I'm learning from this quarantine is that I should quit my day job and just focus on being creative (but keeping the day job's income...ha).

This week's prompt was Color of whole body (one of the first GAWinser photos) [full list of prompts here] Gillian collaborated with fashion line Winser London to create a capsule collection of luxurious winter wear including silk blouses, cashmere jumpers, and wool coats. You can catch me wearing one or many of the items on any given cold-weather day.

I asked my friend Debs for her favorite photo from the first collection and she chose a lovely image of Gillian in the wool swing coat (my favorite coat).

I got to work on a sketch using the drawing guide grid, still the ultimate life-saver.

I started adding color to the coat first. This is the second time I don't start with the face, and I think it works better for me. Adding in the highlights of the coat was so much easier to do because it's just black and a few shades of gray/white. Skin is so dynamic and clothing is so straight forward.

I'm kind of obsessed with how the coat turned out. I wanted to quit while I was ahead. lol

BUT SHE PERSISTED. I continued with the heels (heart eyes) and then her feet and hands. I didn't go into a ton of detail with her hands. I just focused on the coloring and major shadows. Once I got started with her face, I forgot to take screen shots of my progress. Major blogger fail.

I completely started over with her hair twice. Her face was okay and once I couldn't stand to look at it anymore, I sent it to Amy Jo. She is always great with telling me what looks off (even though I already know what looks off, it helps to have someone else's perspective) and how to fix it. In this case, the mouth and chin needed tweaking. For some reason, just her telling me that is enough to see it more clearly and make the necessary changes.

And now for the big reveal! I tried doing a side-by-side with this one and it looked very blurry, so I'm posting it by itself. I LOVE IT. This is my favorite drawing. It's not even close to being perfect, but I see such an improvement and this feels like I'm on the right track.

The original photo:

I have some additional doodles this week! A couple of friends (Karin and Barbara) posted photos of beautiful birds that inspired me to draw outfits. Barbara is an excellent photographer and she always posts the best bird photos, so I just kept drawing outfits!

The last two outfits were inspired by the same bird. Erin requested an outfit and my initial idea was the jacket and pants, but she was thinking a frilly top with shorts, so I added the second outfit.

The Bird Fashion drawings aren't terrible, but I definitely need to improve my figure drawing. I downloaded a book and have been learning way more than I can handle. :) It's a great book, but feels very above my level. I'll get there. In the meantime, check out Moomooi on Instagram. She is goals!!

The next prompt is First GAWinser collection with background, which is technically what I did this week... oops. There are many great photos from that first collection, though, so I chose one that is outdoors. I actually own the entire outfit from this next photo... hehe. Except the shoes, of course, because my feet don't like heels.

If you're finding yourself with extra free time during this quarantine, grab a pencil and paper, draw something you see in your house, or use one of Pink Cheeks Studios' prompts, post it on Instagram and tag @Rourags! I'll post your artwork in my stories!
